Proverbs 19:21 – Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.
Even as a child, Matt has always been curious, adventurous, and had a desire to learn about the plight of others in order to serve them better.
During his high school years Matt began to explore the humanities and underserved. Unknown to his mother and high school English teacher Matt spent 3 days living with the homeless of Pueblo, Colorado just to better understand the challenges they faced and to identify ways to help. After high school Matt went on to become a volunteer EMT and Search & Rescue member in Colorado and Alaska, eventually settling in a remote Alaskan village. In that village Matt served the community as the sole healthcare provider delivering a range of services from primary care, mental health, and emergency medical services. There he learned how to manage a small clinic with a lab and pharmacy and began to understand medical sciences. After years of working in the remote clinics of Alaska, Matt went on to study Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, (MEDEX PA program). After his formal medical training Matt went on to manage a network of clinics in Alaska serving advancing roles as an instructor, clinic manager, medical director, and clinic director.
Later, Matt helped develop, (and now runs), the national initiative to establish primary care hubs for the VA across the nation. This work continues to grow and is recognized as the standard of care for telemedicine in the VA.
However, a life changing experience caused Matt to expand his horizons further. Through his work with the VA, Matt had the opportunity to serve on a medical mission to Manati, Puerto Rico. This is where Gods plans were revealed. In the midst of disaster Matt realized that God had been preparing him for over 30 years to put together a medical mission using the skills and principles he has learned along the way.
Matt currently resides in Idaho and two of his four children were adopted from Uganda. That is part of why he has such a big heart for the ‘Pearl of Africa’.
Harmony Life is honored to have Matt’s passion and expertise to reach the underserved in Uganda and we look forward to what God will do in this adventure!
